BAFTAs 2012: Appropriate Adult and Sherlock Sweep Up

The most glamorous night in television is over for another year. The BAFTAs 2012 were full of surprises, most notably Benedict Cumberbatch missing out on Best Actor to Appropriate Adult’s Dominic West, critically acclaimed for his performance as serial killer Fred West. Appropriate Adult’s cast also picked up the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards, given to Emily Watson and Monica Dolan respectively.

The Sherlock cast and crew also missed out on the YouTube Audience Award to ITV’s Celebrity Juice.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom – Andrew Scott was visibly moved when it was announced he’d won Best Supporting Actor for his role as  Jim Moriarty, thanking the cast and crew and his parents while shaking like a leaf. Cumberbatch and Doctor Who star Matt Smith also presented Steven Moffat with his Special Award, crediting him with their careers.

Moffat appeared chuffed during his speech, commenting: “That’s Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who giving me an award! That’s absolutely brilliant!”

Rolf Harris gave a moving speech upon recieving his BAFTA Fellowship award; he paused to look, amazed, at the standing ovation he was given on his way to the stage.

Other surprises included The Fades winning the Drama Series category, beating the likes of Misfits and Spooks, and Mummifying Alan: Egypt’s Last Secret picking up the Specialist Factual award over the BBC’s Frozen Planet.
